Just Keep Running, Just Keep Running… {Running Motivation Tips}

Though I enjoy running, sometimes in the moment it’s not so pleasant…hills. heat. bugs. untied shoelaces. You name it! It’s the little things that can make all this exercise pretty brutal. A common misconception about running is that only takes a pair of shoes and you’re good to go. This is true, but the majority of runners would say that it is more a mental battle than physical. Here are some tips to help motivate and equip you to be a better runner!

1. Goals (and we’re not talking Soccer)

Whether it’s a PR for a mile or 5 miles in however long it takes, a goal is motivating, and when completed, rewarding. Having a time, distance, or pace to aim for helps keep your eyes on the prize. Goals can be short or long term. I like to make a goal before each run for distance or time. Most recently my goal was running the entire length of the main road in my town, for a total of 6 miles. It took me almost an hour, but I did it! Establish a goal for yourself, and be sure to reward yourself for attaining it!

2. Walk it off

Sometimes you just need to stop. If it’s 101 degrees and the thought of running up that big hill makes you want to throw up, just take a break! It’s okay, and beneficial, to walk for partial segments of long runs.Well placed, 30-60 second walk breaks help extend the mileage that your body can handle. Don’t give in to the urge to walk just when you want to, push yourself and wait until you absolutely NEED to.

3. Grin and Bear it-Literally!

When you’ve hit a tough patch and feel like you can’t go on, try smiling.ย Studies have shown that smiling during stressful situations (running!) help us face them with a more positive outlook. So no matter how silly you may feel, try plastering on a big ol’ grin and keep on going!

4. Pep talk = Pep in your step

You don’t have to be a motivational speaker to give yourself a little motivating pep talk. Sometimes when I’m alone you can find me talking to myself to sprint through the last half mile. It can be a little awkward…especially if you come rounding the corner saying, “You can do it! You’re almost done!” and people are standing there…but it is helpful and motivating. ๐Ÿ™‚

5. No Shirt, No Shoes…There’s a problem. {Get some Gear}

Nobody wants to throw on stinky old tennis shoes that have been sitting in the garage for the last decade to go for a run. Invest in a supportive, well-fitting pair of shoes designed specifically for runners. The brand that works best for me is Asics. There are several brands that make great running shoes! Some include: Nike, Brooks, Mizuno, and Saucony. Finding the right shoes make running…not quite a dream, but less than a nightmare. ๐Ÿ™‚ Also, remember that running isn’t just about shoes! Buy a few pieces of clothing created for runners. Usually these are designed to keep you cool in hot weather through dry-wick technology, and insulate your body heat in the cooler months.

6. Headphones can be your best (ear)BUD

The WORST thing on a run is when you’re really into a song, or just trying to push through to the finish…and your headphones fall out. Ugh. I know it’s so silly that this irritates me so much! It totally messes with your running “groove.” The little white earphones that come with phones don’t cut it. I currently use those, but some that I am planning on purchasing soon are the yurbuds Inspire 100 for Women (in aqua!) These are designed to stay put through all of the jerking movements that we put our headphones through.

7. Make a Playlist!

Compile a playlist of songs that make you feel like you could just conquer the world. Some songs that keep me going are:

  • Eye of The Tiger {Survivor} – Rocky did it, so I can do it…right??
  • Beyond Me {TobyMac} – for those times when me making it up that hill is wayyyy beyond me.
  • This is Living {Hillsong Young & Free} – running next to pretty Texas wildflowers under a gorgeous Lone Star sunset, that really is living to me!
  • You Make Me Brave {Amanda Cook, Bethel Music} – if you see me running with my arms raised in worship, this songs probably on. (I really don’t do that, but still, great song! ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Don’t Stop Believin’ {Journey} – The title says it all!

What helps you when you run? I’d love to hear any tips! Thanks for reading!
